Pottery

Big news on the Pottery side of our business – we are  delighted to welcome Bernie Rowen to Potter Around to work alongside Nick Wright and offer a variety of workshops, parties, corporate events and pottery experiences – be it handbuilding in clay, potter’s wheel or in fact producing pottery for you to paint – commissioned pieces included.

Bernie will also be producing a range of Pottery for sale in the shop and you can watch her at work on the wheel. Karen will also be painting some of her iconic designs onto Bernie’s thrown pieces – these can also be commissioned. Pottery takes place in the barn or our shed. There are several potters wheels available, as well as moulds and an area to learn handbuilding techniques, such as coiling and slabbing. With lots of tools, stamps and glaze available, you will be able to create and decorate a unique piece from clay.

Our two potters are both professionals. Bernie hails from South Africa where she was a production potter running her own studio and her work is much sought after. An experienced teacher with a lovely manner, Bernie will ensure these workshops are a great experience. She will be available most days for you to try your hand at the wheel but there will be specific workshops for adults on Wednesday mornings 10am-12.30 and Wednesday evenings 7-9.30pm. £40 a month for the tuition with the materials you use – clay, kiln time and glaze – costing extra. Pop in to see Bernie to find out more or give her a call.

Nick has recently made pottery his sole job and is loving it. With young children of his own he knows how involved (and messy) they love to get – mind you that can go for the adults too.

Nick will run kids workshops every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday afternoons 1-3pm. £15 a head. No need to book.

At Potter Around we can usually accommodate most timings and courses can be tailored to you and what you want to learn. We can arrange extended courses so that you can learn much more about the techniques involved. Alternatively if you just want a go on the wheel as a taster – then either pop in or give us a call and we can arrange this for you.

Potter’s wheel tuition classes can be booked at a time to suit you for individuals or small groups. At these sessions you learn about clay and create a piece on the wheel with expert tuition. Cost is £25 per head for a group of 3. If you would like to have a go but cannot form a group of 3, either contact us and we will put groups together or you can have a session on your own or a session with a friend for £75 in total for that session. Booking is essential. We will always try to put groups together to keep the cost down for you.

Children’s Pottery Courses and Parties

Projects include piggy banks, name plates, animals and tons more. After each class we will let your pieces dry and will then fire them. You can then return to the studio at any time to decorate and glaze your piece. Each piece you make is £20. This includes all tools, materials and decorating the piece, as well as juice and a snack.

Children’s parties include having a go on a potter’s wheel and handbuilding a piece. We will fire all their work and either dip it in a glaze of your choice, or leave it unglazed. The children can then come back and decorate it themselves later. Parties are £15 a head with a fee of £5 if you choose to paint your piece when ready and have it glazed and refired. Call to book a party or workshop or to find out more.
