Potter Around is a ceramic painting and arts and crafts studio based in Kirknewton on the outskirts of Edinburgh
We offer pottery painting, a range of craft workshops, miniature painting (Warhammer figures), drop in sessions and clubs. You can indulge in jewellery making, glass fusion, throwing on the wheel, knitting and much more, or simply come and buy something in our shop which sells affordable arts and crafts made by local artists.
What Makes Us Different?
Our studio is set in a steading courtyard on a working farm. Inside you will find three rooms – including a specially decorated children’s room, which doubles as a play room and party room.
Our aim is to create a homely, welcoming environment that recaptures making crafts at the farmhouse table.
At Potter Around we will help you as much or as little as you like. We can show you new techniques and even add finishing touches to pieces for you.
We pride ourselves on our quality and range of materials. For example, for pottery painting, we have a wide range of underglaze colours, speckled glazes and lots of speciality glazes. For jewellery we have a great selection of beads, findings, wires and of course, all the tools you could need. We have decopatch papers and most of the ceramic models and ornaments you see in the studio can be decopatched to great effect, or you can choose from a range of papier mache objects. You can also buy the items to take home an decopatch.
Our pricing is very clear and there are no studio fees, or hidden extras. Our workshop leaders are all crafters who sell their work and who are enthusiastic about passing on their knowledge. Kids will always be offered a drink as crafting is thirsty work and we often have the kettle on!
Who is it for?
Potter Around is for everyone. We offer children’s clubs, workshops, plus a range of activities that can be done together. You will find us very child friendly, with baskets full of toys and books and a special baby changing unit.
Potter Around is also for adults. We hold adult workshops and events throughout the year. The studio can be booked for a group or private party and we will always open outside our normal hours for group bookings. We can arrange catering for you or you can bring your own food and wine. Tea and coffee is always available. We are a very sociable studio and you will find a warm welcome at Potter Around.
The Crafts . . .
As well as pottery painting and decopatch, we also run a knitting and crochet club and a range of regular workshops from felting to candles, bath bombs to mosaics. We run courses in oil painting and the potter’s wheel as well our Saturday club for boys (or girls) where you can paint Games Workshop models and learn the rules of the game. We are open late on a Wednesday so that adults can indulge in some child free crafting or join one of our workshops.
We have the odd cocktail party, where you can decorate cocktail glasses and drink cocktails – these can be booked at a time to suit your party if you have over 8 people in your group. You can also book taster sessions on the potter’s wheel or request a candle making or bathbomb/soap making workshop. Details of these are available on the website. facebook page and in the studio. If you can’t find what you are looking for, please give us a call. We are always interested to hear from professional, enthusiastic crafters who would like to run workshops.
Personalised gifts . . .
If you like the idea of hand painted pottery in the colour and design of your choosing but without having to paint it yourself, just say the word and we’ll do it for you. You can also select items from the Kirknewton Pottery hand painted personalised pottery range, our own range which is now being stocked in shops throughout Edinburgh and the Lothians. And our range of handthrown beautifully glazed pottery is ever growing. We also take commissions for jewellery pieces and glass work and our artists and potter will take commissions too.
