Potter Around is a ceramic painting business and craft studio based in Kirknewton on the outskirts of Edinburgh. Please ‘potter around’ our site and discover more about us and the enthusiasm we have for unique hand painted pieces and crafts.
We founded Potter Around in 2010 to realise our dream of creating a magical studio where anyone, whatever their skill, can come to be creative, have fun and relax; where different arts and crafts are on offer, with the best tools and materials available and where all the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. And a mobile business which will bring everything you need to create beautiful pieces to you.
We are now firmly on our journey to create a business combining our pottery painting with craft workshops, miniature painting, drop in sessions and clubs in jewellery making, glass making, throwing on the wheel, knitting together with a shop selling affordable arts and crafts made by local people, jewellery making supplies and Games Workshop models for painting miniatures. We would love you to join us on our journey and be part of it as we grow Potter Around into something really special.
What Makes Us Different?
Our studio is set in a steading courtyard on a working farm. Inside you will find 3 rooms – including a specially decorated children’s room, which doubles as a play room and party room. Our aim is to create a homely, welcoming environment that recaptures making crafts at the farmhouse table. At Potter Around we will help you as much or as little as you like, show you new techniques and are happy to put the finishing touches to pieces for you. We pride ourselves on our quality and range of materials. For example, for pottery painting, we have loads of underglaze colours, speckled glazes and lots of speciality glazes. For jewellery we have a great selection of beads, findings, wires and of course, all the tools you could need. And we have now introduced decopatch. You can decopatch most of the ceramic models and ornaments to great effect or choose from a range of papier mache objects. We have lots of papers to choose from which you can use in the studio or buy in the shop to decopatch at home.
Our pricing is very clear and there are no studio fees, or hidden extras. Our workshop leaders are all crafters who sell their work and who are enthusiastic about passing on their knowledge. And, in line with creating a homely atmosphere, we provide free tea, coffee and squash.
Who is it for?
Potter Around is for everyone. We cater for adults and children alike. We run children’s clubs and workshops. You will find us very child friendly, with baskets full of toys and books and a special baby changing unit.
Potter Around is also for adults. We hold adult workshops and events throughout the year. The studio can be booked for a group or private party and we will always open outside our normal hours for a group. We can arrange catering for you or you can bring your own food and wine. Tea and coffee is always available. We are a very sociable studio and you will find a warm welcome at Potter Around.
The Crafts . . .
As well as pottery painting and decopatch, we also run a knitting club, hold jewellery, textile, pottery and glass workshops. We run art courses in oil painting and aromatherapy workshops making Candles and Cosmetics. And we now run miniature painting clubs using the Games Workshop models. Tuesday evenings are our popular Ladies Night with pottery painting and knitting.
We have the odd cocktail party, where you can decorate cocktail glasses and drink cocktails – these can be booked at a time to suit your party if you have over 8 people in your group. You can also book sessions on the potter’s wheel and bring your own jewellery projects to our drop in jewellery sessions every Wednesday where Kirsty and Irene are on hand to help and inspire you. Details of these are available on the website, our facebook page and in the studio. If you can’t find what you are looking for, please give us a call. We are always interested to hear from professional, enthusiastic crafters who would like to run workshops.
Personalised gifts . . .
If you like the idea of hand painted pottery in the colour and design of your choosing but without having to paint it yourself, just say the word and we’ll do it for you. You can also select items from the Kirknewton Pottery hand painted personalised pottery range, our own range which is now being stocked in shops throughout Edinburgh and the Lothians. We also take commissions for jewellery pieces and glass work and our artists and potter will take commissions too.
We are committed to supporting good causes and charities wherever we can. We run various events during the year where we donate our profits to charity. All our framing is done by Poppy Factory Framing, part of the Lady Haig Poppy Charity, where the proceeds go to support disabled ex-servicemen and women. We are also full of fundraising ideas if you are a group or association, looking to raise funds.
Come with your family, come with friends or come alone, we would love to see you soon at Potter Around.
